This air fryer salmon recipe is the one I make when I want a real dinner on the table in 12 minutes flat. The garlic butter goes on, the air fryer does the work, and you end up with a crispy, golden top and a center that flakes apart with a fork.
This 12-minute air fryer salmon basically cooks itself.
No flipping, no babysitting. The hot circulating air crisps the top and cooks the salmon through evenly, so you put the fillets in, set a timer, and walk away. It's even quicker than my air fryer salmon bites because there's no cubing.
34 grams of protein per fillet. If you're tracking macros (or just trying to eat more protein at dinner), this is one of the easiest wins on the site. Run your numbers on our protein calculator and you'll see why salmon shows up so often in my high protein dinners.
The garlic butter does all the flavor work. Melted butter, garlic, smoked paprika and lemon — that's it. It's the same simple seasoning idea that makes my air fryer chicken thighs and honey garlic shrimp so reliable, just tuned for salmon.
Here's what you'll need.
Four salmon fillets, a little butter and olive oil, garlic, a few pantry spices, and a lemon — you almost certainly have everything except the fish already.
Here's how it all comes together.
STEP 1 — PAT THE SALMON DRY
Take the fillets out of the fridge 10 minutes early and pat them very dry with paper towels. Dry salmon = a crispy top instead of a steamed one. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F while you do this.
STEP 2 — MIX THE GARLIC BUTTER
Stir together the melted butter, olive oil, minced garlic, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper in a small bowl. The oil keeps the butter from burning at 400°F.
STEP 3 — BRUSH IT ON
Brush the garlic butter generously over the top and sides of each fillet. Save a spoonful for after cooking — a last-second brush makes them look glossy and taste twice as buttery.
STEP 4 — INTO THE BASKET
Lay the fillets skin-side down in the basket with a little space between each one. Don't crowd them — air needs to move around the fish to crisp the top. Cook in two batches if your basket is small.
STEP 5 — AIR FRY 8 TO 10 MINUTES
Air fry at 400°F for 8–10 minutes depending on thickness. You're looking for a golden top and an internal temperature of 125–130°F for medium (it'll climb a few degrees as it rests). Squeeze lemon over, shower with dill, and serve.
Things I learned while testing this recipe.
Thickness matters more than weight. A 1-inch fillet takes 8 minutes; a thick 1½-inch center-cut piece needs the full 10, sometimes 11. Check the thickest fillet first and pull the thinner ones early if needed.
Don't preheat with the basket empty for too long. Three minutes is plenty. Any longer and the butter hits a screaming-hot basket and browns faster than the fish cooks.
Skin-on fillets are more forgiving. The skin insulates the bottom so the flesh stays juicy. It also peels right off after cooking if you don't want to eat it.
Frozen salmon works too — add 4–5 minutes and brush the butter on after the first 5 minutes, once the surface has thawed enough for it to stick.
Why this is my go-to high protein weeknight dinner.
34g protein and healthy omega-3 fats in a 6-ounce fillet, with almost no carbs — it fits a GLP-1-friendly or high protein plan without any tweaking.
Prep the garlic butter ahead. It keeps in a jar in the fridge for a week, so on busy nights the only "cooking" is brushing and pressing start.
It reheats better than most fish because the air fryer gets the top crisp again in 3 minutes — great for meal-prep lunches over rice or greens.
Roasted cauliflower — low-carb and easy to make in the oven while the air fryer is busy.
Salmon rice bowl — flake leftovers over rice with avocado and spicy mayo the next day.
Just in case you have leftovers.
Storing: Cool completely, then refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 3 days. I don't recommend freezing cooked salmon — it turns dry and mealy.
Reheating: Air fry at 350°F for 3–4 minutes until just warmed through, or eat it cold flaked into salads and grain bowls (honestly my favorite way). Skip the microwave unless you cover it and use 50% power in short bursts.

Ingredients
4 salmon fillets (about 6 oz each, 1-inch thick, skin on or off)
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1 tablespoon olive oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
½ teaspoon garlic powder
¾ teaspoon kosher salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
1 lemon (half juiced, half in wedges)
1 tablespoon fresh dill or parsley, chopped, for serving
Instructions
Prep: Preheat the air fryer to 400°F for 3 minutes. Pat the salmon very dry with paper towels.
Mix the garlic butter: In a small bowl stir together melted butter, olive oil, garlic, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper.
Season: Brush most of the garlic butter over the tops and sides of the fillets, reserving about 1 tablespoon.
Air fry: Place fillets skin-side down in the basket, not touching. Air fry at 400°F for 8–10 minutes, until the top is golden and the salmon flakes easily (125–130°F internal for medium).
Finish: Brush with the reserved garlic butter, squeeze lemon juice over, sprinkle with dill, and serve with lemon wedges.
Notes
Thicker fillets (1½ inch) need 10–11 minutes. For frozen salmon, air fry 5 minutes plain, then brush with butter and cook 7–8 minutes more. Cook in batches rather than crowding the basket.
